THE FRIENDS OF MOUNT ATHOS
HILANDAR APPEAL
Patron
HRH The Prince of Wales
This is a copy of the original announcement (reservation information deleted) reproduced here as part of the history of this appeal.
It is now four years since the catastrophic fire at Hilandar gutted almost half of the monasteryÕs buildings. Since that time, the Friends with the encouragement and support of HRH The Prince of Wales have been actively involved in supporting the brotherhood in its task of restoring the monastery. So far, the money raised by the Friends has been applied to the rebuilding of the monasteryÕs bakery. Much has been done; but much remains to be done.
To launch the next phase of the Hilandar Appeal, the Friends are holding a reception in the presence of HRH The Prince of Wales at Bridgewater House by kind permission of the Latsis family.
The evening will include musical entertainment, provided by an ensemble led by Dimitri Conomos. The ensemble will perform chant appropriate to the various traditions represented on the Holy Mountain, as well as vocal and instrumental folk music from the Balkans. Dr Vladeta Jankovic, formerly Serbian ambassador to the United Kingdom, now ambassador to the Holy See, will speak about the progress made to date on the rebuilding work at Hilandar.
Admission will be by ticket only and all sums raised will be applied to the rebuilding and refurbishment of the monasteryÕs library. Members are warmly encouraged to include an additional donation towards this most important project, or if unable to attend, to make a contribution in support of this important project. UK taxpayers are asked to complete a Gift Aid Declaration, which will increase the value of their contributions.
