Autumn Meeting

 

 

 

There will be a meeting of the society in London on Tuesday 25 November 2008.

The meeting begins at 6.00 pm with a service of

 

Orthodox Vespers

 

in the church of St Dunstan in the West, 184 Fleet Street, EC4,

served by Metropolitan Kallistos.

 

After the service there will be a glass of wine at St BrideÕs Institute in Bride Lane.

 

At about 7.15 pm, also in St BrideÕs Institute,

 

Dr Veronica della Dora

 

will give a talk entitled

 

Gazes from the Sea: Mount Athos, Women, and the Geographical Imagination, 1880–1980

 

A native of Venice, Veronica della Dora wrote her doctoral dissertation at the University of California, Los Angeles, on ÔGeographies of the Holy Mountain. Post-Byzantine and Western Representations of the Monastic Republic of Mount AthosÕ. She is now a lecturer in geography at the University of Bristol with particular interests in cultural and historical geography, landscape representations, the history of cartography, and sacred geographies. She is the co-editor of High Places: Cultural Geographies of Mountains, Ice and Science (London, IB Tauris, 2008).

 

There is no charge for attending the meeting. As always non-members are most welcome.
