In a historic first for the Holy Mountain, FoMA is honoured to collaborate with Pantokratoros Monastery to reproduce a set of six original, contemporary linocuts. These works capture the profound spiritual essence of the monastery, translating the silent prayers of the monks into visual form. The mountainous peninsula of Mount Athos in northern Greece stands as a preeminent centre of Eastern Orthodox monasticism, enjoying an autonomous status since Byzantine times. Known as the ‘Holy Mountain’, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988 and serves as a living sanctuary where art and spirituality are inseparable. Mount Athos is rightly revered as one of the primary shrines of the Christian world and the guardian of ancient spiritual tradition. While it is often assumed that artistic influences arrived here merely from external lands, the truth is far more transformative. Upon setting foot on this sacred soil, the artist undergoes a profound change; their creativity is infused with a unique grace and inner light, born from an atmosphere of deep prayer and silence. On Athos, art is not merely preserved; it is inspired. Here, the artist’s brush moves not for worldly glory, but as an act of prayer. The monastic artist creates not a mere pattern, but a profession of faith. From this devotion emerges a distinct Athonite style – strict and sublime, devoid of external splendour, yet brimming with inner blessedness.
